The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
